Why do you, When?

Happy Sunday!

The first week of September has now happened. A little surreal, isn’t it?

Yes, the title of this blog is a little strange…but why do you do what you do? When do you do it?

Not clear?

Why do you book a voice lesson?

Why do you book a coaching?

Why do you record?

Why do you make a reel? or a combo of clips?

Why do you audition?

Why do you?

And then, when do you do it?

As the fall season starts, and the summer releases its hold, it gets busier in the studio. People are back from summer vacation, summer on-hold, summer contracts; It’s time to shift gears and get ready for auditions, for possibilities, for more…

So, why do you do it? When do you do it?

If something is important to you, don’t wait until a few days prior to try to book with a major/in demand teacher or coach. They won’t have time, and you are going to be stuck.

Building that voice, or developing stronger technical behavior doesn’t happen overnight; know you need to commit to it, ONGOING. It doesn’t mean you are stuck at weekly. Those of us who teach or coach know this. We need to evaluate and recommend, based on our expertise and experience, and then you can make your commitment based on your time/funds/etc.

Don’t expect coming in once or twice a year is going to really make a difference if you are still developing vocal behavior and vocabulary. It won’t, no matter how amazing that teacher of coach is. None of us has Unicorn Glitter to throw all over you. Truly.

This is athleticism. This is behavior. Neither happens literally overnight. Changes can be developed if there’s nothing in the way, yes, but that doesn’t mean it is behavior yet. There is nothing sexy about it. It’s the time and the commitment and the sweat equity that is about what you are willing to do.

I say often to my singers, that the reason things are beginning to work, is because THEY are DOING the work. I am there to suggest, to listen, to help guide, but I can’t do the work: THEY DO THE WORK.

That work demands your attention. When? NOW. Or it might bite you in the ass. Trust me on that.

Find the people you can do the work WITH: voice teacher/technician; voice coach; dramatic coach; Discover what they can offer you. Work with it. Hone it. Make it yours.

Why? Because if you say you want to pursue this crazy profession, then you must embody it all. When? How does NOW sound?

I dare you.

Don’t dismiss your VOICE before you find it fully and ongoing. Jobs come and go; your voice, your craft, your process is ongoing and non-negotiable.
