Structure, with Space!
When I tell you that the singers I work with inspire me DAILY, I mean. This blog title is no exception. Thank you Sarah Craft for this one! I told you I would be writing a blog post!
Are you like me? If I have too much open-ended time, I tend to get nothing done, and then slam myself for wasting time. However, if I have 500 things to do and I can structure my day well, then they all get done.
How do you function well? And, what does “well” mean to you?
Do you “create” within a structure? Do you need that structure in order to motivate yourself? Do you leave a little space to change focus, direction, possibility in case you are inspired to do so?
I honestly believe that structure is key for creatives. Once we create the boundaries of that structure, we can begin to find how we function within them, and begin to shape the structure accordingly.
This gives us permission AND forgiveness!! If the structure has permission to morph and change, then we find the space we need to breathe, explore, dream a little.
Let’s look at practicing. What is practicing? Create some structure to explore that concept as it relates to YOU. What is the structure of practice for you? Craft? Discipline? And then, what are you working on specifically vocally within that structure? Do you have the tools to access that? How? Why? When? Does it create another structure of vocal behavior that will then inhabit new material? old material? endurance? momentum?
Do you see where I am going?
Structure, with space, allows use to stay present in the process. It isn’t just for the sake of practicing; it is for so many other possibilities and in doing so, so many accomplishments within that structure.
I love the word “structure” as opposed to “organizing”. Organizing can be pretty one dimensional. Structuring, however…ah….there is something spacious and freeing about the word, yet allows us to create.
So, how will you structure your day, your week, your fall season? Will you give yourself permission to do with space and breath to allow for change and possibility?
Will you begin to sketch out each day with a structure that you know you can inhabit, and give yourself permission to change that as needed?
These are my explorations too. Let’s do it together!
