Who do you want to be?

How do you want to be?

I ask myself these questions daily. I am more conscious of these questions as I get older and simply experience more life.

I am not always successful in the answers, but at least I am asking the questions!

And what about these boxes? Sometimes self-imposed, often unconsciously, but more often imposed from industry, establishment, the should/shouldn’t - you know it well.

Boxes are fine to contain things that a finite.

Boxes are NOT fine for infinite. You are infinite. Your artistry and craft and human-ness is constantly growing and evolving, and you do NOT fit in a box of anybody’s making. Period.

Including your own.

Question where THAT came from! The boxes we put ourselves into are in response to something or someone.

These boxes sometimes have a false sense of security, of boundary, but they also stifle energy, exploration, possibility and authenticity.

The number of times I have met young artists who have “obediently” remained in the box they were told was “theirs” and have stifled their creative light is astounding.

I have my stories too: ever been told you are “difficult” because you question the box? Or simply want to reveal what you are and who you are becoming?

Yes, all of that.

That doesn’t mean you have to come out screaming like Xena warrior either. Recognizing the box, how you got there, and then how you need to get rid of it and reveal the artist you are NOW can be a process; it can be painful; it can be gentle; it can be whatever you choose for yourself.

Will you get push-back? Maybe.

Will you get questioning? Maybe.

Will you begin to find your tribe who will embrace you authentically? Absolutely.

Be gentle with yourself. These boxes are often hiding in plain sight, and are a shock to the system when we realize we are still relying on them, and yet, they are not serving us.

Who do you want to be?

How do you want to be?

No box can contain that. So, BE. Without the box. Create the boundaries YOU need and stay fluid within them. Do not confuse boundaries for boxes: One allows you to morph and evolve and become; the other demands you stay still, do as you are told, and remain the same.

I know which one I want.

How about you?
