You Make it look so easy…

The athleticism of performance does this. This is why people believe that performing is “easy”.

We are all laughing our asses off right now.

Easy? Hardly.

What allows us to get to the point of “ease”?

Athleticism, consistency, focus, commitment, self-realization, mindset, and the list goes on.

Ease is not easy. Ease means you have the technique to access and the ability to balance the execution fully.

Once that balance finds a momentum, the ease is accessed, but easy?

Athletes still sweat. Still get tired. Still burn out.

When we hear people say “oh that’s so easy!” or “you make it look so easy!” - thank you? And no, it’s not.

The point of making it look so easy is to be so aware of your work that the WORK doesn’t SHOW. The accessibility of the art is revealed. The work now allows the audience to experience the result of that work.

When we watch a dancer, a runner, a gymnast, a figure skater, a ball player run the field, yes they make it look EFFORTLESS. We don’t see what it took to get there. Sometimes we see physio tape, sometimes a limp in the end zone or over the finish line; we don’t see why. We don’t see the bloody toes in the satin ballet slipper. We simply experience the EASE that is presented.

As singers, we are no different. We need to find that accessibility in order to discover that ease, in order to allow the pieces - physicality, vocally, musically, dramatically - to come together and reveal.

Let’s not confuse ease with easy and let’s not confuse ease with work or work with pain.

Should you feel like you’ve worked out athletically when you sing? Yes. WHERE is crucial. The body is your instrument. It needs to be ACTIVE to do what we do, no matter if you do 8 shows a week, or have to project over a 40 piece orchestra with no amplification. Muscles need to fire. The balance of release and tenacity have to be realized.

Will you sweat? You better. Will you need some protein afterward? Absolutely. Or a nap?

Embrace that athleticism. Embrace the ease you are developing in that athleticism: when the form is fluid; when the strength supports; when the voice and breath truly feel buoyant and connected; when the multi-dimensions of you come together and truly SING.

If you make it look easy to someone else, then you are truly starting to discover your ease. You will only find that ease when you do the work.

Are you? Willing to do the work?

Completely up to you.
